Murder probe 4 arrested

Murder squad detectives were today continuing to quiz four men over the death of John Bonnet over the weekend.

The local men – aged 23, 27, 30 and 37 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being questioned at Wincton police station.

Det Supt Alistair McGinty, head of Wincton Police’s Force Major Investigation Team, said: “The plan is to continue interviewing these individuals, and try to determine what’s happened.

“It’s a relatively contained investigation.

“It looks as though (Mr Bonnet) received head injuries and as a result of these injuries he died.

“It looks like there’s been a gathering of people at this address, we’re not quite sure for what purpose.

“We’re working through what the relationships are between these four men and Mr Bonnet.

“We think alcohol probably is involved but we need to get to the bottom of how much and what part it played in it.”

Det Supt McGinty also praised the response of people nearby in helping with the investigation.

He added: “We’ve had a good response from the local community.

“We recognise the impact this has on the confidence of the community and we’re doing all we can to find out what happened in this case.

“It’s an incident which has been contained to this house, and the risk to other members within that community is very low indeed.”

Neighbours on Rubble Avenue have reacted with shock at Sunday morning’s events.

Paul Geddis, 70, said: “It is a bit of a shock.

“All I know is I came back from getting my newspapers and it was cordoned off.

“It was just a mystery as to what happened.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “It is a shock because it’s not the sort of thing you expect.

“It’s usually a quiet street.”
